Page #9: Quote #1: "The townspeople thought I was out of my mind when I finally signed that lease."

Explanation: Mr. Small was talking about how some townspeople thought he was crazy when he signed the lease to the house his family is going to live in in Ohio. It is a house that once was a stop on the Underground Railroad. I think that the townspeople thought he was crazy because it might be weird living in a house that used to help slaves hide so they would not go back to the South and they would continue on their jouney north to escape to Canada where it was safe. The reason why this is important is because maybe Mr. Small didn't relize why they thought he was out of his mind because it could of been a bad idea or a good idea.

Page #8: Quote #2: The house was an important station on the Underground Railroad.

Explanation: The house that the Small's just bought was a important station in the Underground Railroad that helped slaves escape from the South to try to run away to Canada where they would be free. Many slaves might've stopped at the house and gotten food, drinks, blankets and more. But what the slaves usually wanted at houses was hiding places. I wonder if the Small's are scared to live in a house that used to have slaves? This is important because maybe the Small's can learn more about the Underground Railroad and how the house they live in helped slaves get free from the South or learn why the owner of the house didn't want to help the slaves. Did the owner help the slaves or did he/she not help them?

Page#28 Quote#1: "You are to speak to no one about the foundation's report on the house of Dies Drear."

This quote was said by Thomas' dad, in the car on the way to the house of Dies Drear. It was said after Thomas had asked "Whatever became of the the third slave?". It is important because it shows that it is the third slave that dad is concerned about and that the history of the house is dreadful.

Page#25 Quote#2: "Mr.Pluto was in it but I didint know it until now!"

This quote was said by Thomas after Mr. Small discribed Mr. Pluto. It is refering to Thomas' dream he had about Mr. Pluto but he hadn't known it until Mr. Small discribed him again. It is important because it shows that Mr. Pluto is related to  Dies Drear.

Page 37.   " I had expected the furniture from the van to be piled in this hall," said Mr. Small.

Explanation: I think this is a clue that the house is haunted . Mr. Small doesn't agree that the house is haunted. He keeps making up excuses because he doesn't want to be the one blamed for buying the haunted house. Mr. Small's excuse for the house not being haunted is that Mr. Pluto placed all of the furniture in the rooms. Mr. Pluto even told Mr. Small that the house is haunted. I wonder if the two slaves and Dies Drear are doing this to scare the Small family away?

Page 41    " I think they are just tired out," said Mr. Small.

Explanation: Mr. Small is just now realizing that the house is really haunted. At the very moment he did not know what to say so he stuttered at first. But gives another excuse because he does not want to scare the twins. But the twins saw something unusual. I think they already know the house is haunted. Mr. Small just figured out that Mr. Pluto wasn't kidding when he said the house was haunted. When will Mr. Small realize the house is haunted by Dies Drear and two slaves?

Page 52: Quote #1: " Before I call my father!"said Thomas.

Explanation: This is showing that Thomas is getting kind of scared of Mac Darrow and Pesty. Thomas is probably thinking that the Mac and Pesty are there to do something to him so Thomas starts to threaten them by saying before I call my father and other things like that. Pesty and the Mac showed up out of nowhere on a horse and they took a while and looked around. Thomas tried to to get them off the yard but it took some time before they disappeared into the trees.

Page 49: Quote #2:  " Anybody go foolin' around down there maybe will get lost forever." said Mac Darrow.

Explanation:  If anyone goes down into the hole then they are probably going to get lost or be haunted by ghosts and spirits.  It is also showing  that if anyone had heard that saying then they are probably not going to want to go down there or go near the house because they would not want to experience all of the horrible things that could happen in that deep, dark, and unknown tunnels.

Page #61: Quote#1 " I thought you wouldn't see the button by the front door so soon." said Mr. Small

Explanation: I think that Mr. Small thinks that Thomas isn't smart enough because he thought he couldn't find it so fast because it was kind of hidden. Also, I think that Mr. Small thinks that Thomas isn't capable of finding the button. I would be mad if my dad told me that I wasn't really that smart because I couldn't figure out where something is.

Page #62: Quote #2 " There was something there!" said Thomas

Explanation: I think that Thomas told his parents because he wanted to feel safe and protected. I think that Thomas really wanted his parents to check the tunnel out so when Thomas' dad checked it out there was no sound like he heard when he was in the tunnel, so he was relieved.

He was trying to pry information from Mr. Pluto  without giving himself away. They were in a conversation that Mr.Pluto was making up along the way. It was about the horse black that Pesty was riding. It was important because it adds to the suspition about Mr. Pluto.

Quote#2 Pg.90 "When hoot owl screeching, westward flies, gauge the sun ... Look to Dies, And Run"

This quote was said by Mr. Pluto after Mr. Small pried information from Mr. Pluto who was making up a story about black, the horse that Pesty was riding and that she was sick from nervousness or shock or so he said. Quote #1

" I'm afraid I miss took your boy." Mr. Pluto cleared his voice.

Mr. Pluto thought Thomas was a stranger so he acted like he was the devil and ran Thomas back into his house. Mr. Pluto is explaining that he has to protect the land by trying to scare strangers off and because he thought that Thomas was a stranger trying to mess with him. He did apologize for chasing Thomas all the way home while acting like the devil in chapter 6.

Quote #2

"You are Mr. Pluto," said Mrs. Small.

Mrs. Small doesn't trust Mr. Pluto when he first walks in the door. She feels she needs to protect her family but doesn't give any clues about how she feels but she doesn't know what to think of him. She might think that it is someone else because when Mr. Small discribed him it wasn't how he looked when they all saw him.

Page #100: Quote #1: " Who do you think you are?"said Thomas.

This was said when Thomas first entered his room and tried to fix a chair that was stuck to the ground in his new and boring room. Thomas had thought that someone might anwser but that didn't happen. He was talking to a chair with no one or nothing in it. Why does Thomas not like the chair in his room?

Page #96: Quote # 2: " Mr. Pluto is the strangest man, isn't he?" said Thomas.

Page #113: Quote #1: "They weren't last night or else I would've seen them" said Thomas.

Explanation: The Smalls are wondering how the triangle got in the door because he would've known if someone came into the house and did it but it could be a ghost because ghosts are usually silent. It also could've been the Darrows trying to scare the Smalls away.

Explanation: I think that Mr. Pluto is trying to protect them because he wanted to be protected from the ghost that live in the tunnel. Maybe something bad happend to him and he doesn't want it to happen to the Small's.

Explanation: Thomas and Mr.Small are looking all around Mr. Pluto's house/cave and they can't find him anywere when really they could've caught up to him. Mr. Small was using a figure of speech which means Mr. Pluto couldn't of vanished in thin air and must be hiding somewhere in the in his house/cave. I wonder where Mr. Pluto is hiding? Is he hiding?

Page #179: Quote #2: " May be he's the devil like you thought" said Mr. Small.
